What Are PICCs?
PICCs, or Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters, are long, thin intravenous devices inserted into a peripheral vein—typically in the arm—and advanced until they reach a central vein near the right atrium of the heart. Their primary function is to allow continuous or intermittent infusions, for both short- and long-term therapies.
There are several types of PICCs, each designed to meet specific clinical needs: single-lumen, double-lumen, or triple-lumen configurations.
When to Use PICCs?
PICCs are indicated in a wide range of clinical situations, particularly when long-term central venous access is required. They are especially useful for:
- Long-term antibiotic therapy
- Chemotherapy
- Parenteral nutrition infusion
- Administration of drugs that are irritating to peripheral veins
- Frequent blood sampling
- Complex inpatient or home-based treatments
Compared to other types of central venous access, PICCs carry a lower risk of infectious complications, can be inserted outside of surgical settings, and offer a safe implantation option even in outpatient or home-care environments.
