The management of intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) is a critical aspect of monitoring critically ill patients, particularly in intensive care units. The assembled IAP measurement system developed by Numantec is a complete, sterile, and ready-to-use solution designed to ensure reliable monitoring of intra-abdominal pressure through indirect measurement of intravesical pressure.
This system consists of multiple integrated components which, when used together, enable early detection of conditions such as intra-abdominal hypertension and help prevent progression to abdominal compartment syndrome, a potentially life-threatening complication in hospitalised patients.
By combining the expertise of the companies within the Group, Numantec has developed a dedicated kit for intra-abdominal pressure measurement, consisting of the following components:
1. Sterile urine meter with collection bag, equipped with a 120 cm connection tube, a needle-free sampling port connector, and a 2000 ml drainage bag. This device enables accurate urine output measurement and integrates seamlessly with the pressure monitoring system.
2. Three-way silicone Foley catheter, single-use and balloon-retained, size CH18, featuring a radiopaque line to facilitate correct positioning.
3. IAP Securmeter manometer, a sterile, single-use, non-invasive medical device designed for intermittent monitoring of intra-abdominal pressure through intravesical pressure measurement. It provides a stable connection between the Foley catheter and the urine meter.
4. PENTAFLUSH pre-filled syringe (0.9% NaCl): the kit includes a ready-to-use 20 ml pre-filled syringe containing sterile saline solution (0.9% NaCl). The saline is used for effective priming of the entire system.
IAP Management: How Does It Work?
The system operates through indirect measurement of intra-abdominal pressure via intravesical pressure. The pre-filled saline syringe is used to prime the entire system and eliminate dead space. The fluid then transmits the intra-abdominal pressure, which is measured by the manometer. The recorded value corresponds to the intra-abdominal pressure.
This method is clinically recognised as the reference standard for IAP monitoring in critically ill patients.
Numantec System for Intra-Abdominal Pressure Measurement
The assembled intra-abdominal pressure measurement system is a complete, ready-to-use kit designed for the early identification of intra-abdominal hypertension and the prevention of abdominal compartment syndrome, particularly in critically ill patients.
Through the integration of a Foley catheter, urine meter, Securmeter manometer, and pre-filled syringe, the system enables accurate and timely monitoring of a key clinical parameter. In doing so, it plays a significant role in preventing abdominal complications in hospital settings.
Numantec developed this intra-abdominal pressure monitoring kit with the aim of providing tangible support to healthcare professionals in daily clinical practice. The result is a single, comprehensive solution that includes all necessary components for rapid and reliable monitoring. This integrated approach is designed with full respect for the patient, placing safety, quality of care, and health protection at its core.
